The Red Turtle (レッドタートル Reddo Taatoru), is the second full-length theatrical feature film to be co-produced by Studio Ghibli, after their previous work with Production I.G on Ghost in the Shell 2 - Innocence in 2004. This is also Ghibli's first European co-production, with France's Wild Bunch, Why Not Productions, Belvision, Arte France Cinema and CN4 taking part, along with Prima Linea overseeing the Animation. Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata served as artistic producer, supervising the storyboards.
This is the last work of the animation master Isao Takahata. The film has the touching, introspective, down-to-earth feel that Takahata conveyed so well in his films. A fitting farewell from the humane and revolutionary artist.
It is best watched without any foreknowledge of the plot or the story line. The film has many layers and allegoric twists that different viewers will interpret differently.
