Project notes:
This is one of the two different Monster Kid movies, based on an old manga by Fujiko A. Fujio (not to be confused with his longtime partner, Fujiko F. Fujio). Their works, while popular, are just not for me. But I am better disposed towards this than I was towards Time Patrol Bon, which I captured a few months ago. The artwork is more detailed, even intricate in places, and its being used to render more monsters, and less people, which seems to help as well.
The two Monster Kid TV series have been reissued on DVD, but the two movies don’t seem to have been. So if you like this, well, there’s more of it out there!
This is my first release with ld-decode’s new digital audio support. It was added in v5.0, but mostly didn’t work until recently with v6.0. I have decoded, and included, both audio digital and analog tracks, with the digital track being set as the default track in the MKV. The digital audio seems to be pretty on-par compared with a conventional capture, which is also using the digital track – I even did a quick eyeball comparison in Audacity. The analog track is louder, so be warned if your volume is cranked up.
As to the video, there are a lot of red backgrounds with fine patterned black lines. Red is a difficult color in NTSC signals, and this combo led to some uncommon dotcrawl problems. There was also some significant frame misalignments, most of which I could mask, but the ones at the top of the screen were pretty deep, so you’ll still see those in some scenes.
The unfiltered DVD conversion has both Domesday and conventional caps – I still did the conventional cap just to hedge my bets with the audio.
