How come the filesize of an Oshi no Ko episode is half the size of the average Urusei Yatsura episode lmao. Did HIDIVE's video quality get worse?
every season HIDIVE is worst
hidive are the masters of bitstarving
@AttackonTitanSucksAss Hidive uses CRF (Constant Rate Factor) encoding, basically compression that adjusts the bit rate throughout the video in order to maintain a certain level of "quality" (to oversimplify a bit, to maintain a certain amount of detail). As opposed to CBR (Constant Bit Rate, what Crunchyroll uses), which always uses the same bit rate throughout the video, so parts with more detail will end up with worse quality than parts with more detail. Hidive uses the *same rate factor* (as well as encoding settings as a whole) for both this show and that one. The reason Urusei Yatsura ends up with much larger file sizes is that show contains a ton of artificial "detail" that inflates the file size. *It has nothing to do with quality.*
Great show but damn killing off the best girl ep 1 T_T
@XerBlade Not correct tho. Crunchyroll uses 2pass instead of crf. Both are technically considered as variable bitrate (you can see that in the media info), even though you select a certain bitrate target for 2pass. There is also a significant quality difference between regular cbr and 2pass. But it's still a bitrate target, so... Nontheless, the CRF value for Hidive is so high, that it will look kinda shit anyway, even when it's the better approach.
@eXmendiC Really? I guess they switched at some point. I hadn't bothered to check Crunchyroll's MediaInfo in years. Still, that was just a random aside that doesn't affect the main thing I was saying in the slightest. BTW, the encoding method is actually called VBR (Variable Bit Rate). 2pass is a mode of VBR. People used to often run with 2pass off to save time until that ended up ceasing to be a serious issue, especially with things like the setting for a fast first pass (which is less effective but generally good enough as long as you don't absolutely need a very specific file size).
it's fucking anime. Even the lowest quality bitrate I've ever seen has still been watchable. you fags are insufferable
“Even the lowest quality bitrate I’ve ever seen is watchable” Maybe if you’re watching on a phone but uh if you’re watching on anything bigger than an iPad mini, low quality encoding is absolutely noticeable and can make some scenes, especially those with lots of particles or low brightness, literally unwatchable.
Literally watchable. I watched it.
Looks good to me for this show at least, I'm not sure how it would look on something with a more intense compositing though
So in other words, HIDIVE's quality is shit. Thanks for the clarification.
Baby's first Hidive release v2
@fishgiver wth is wrong with your profile picture? you're legit sus as hell. Pedo
@MarioLuigi0404 then buy crunchyroll and watch it cunt or make your own release. I'm watching on a wide monitor and it's fine. The 1.3g files are bloated as fuck and legit look no better. I swear you see the filesize and complain before you see that it's perfectly fine. Rope asap.
