I'm just going to ask... Is there an issue with using AV1 encoding?
Just people afraid of new things. And not updating their media player software for over a year. Like when HEVC came out in 2013.

People who balk at AV1 (ESPECIALLY people balking within the last 12 months) are almost always people who play pretend at being expert pixelweebs and don't actually understand codecs or codec development. If you primarily watch on PC, there has been no reason to be against AV1 for probably 2 years at this point. And new mobile devices have had hardware AV1 decode support for a couple years now too. Well, flagships have - although Apple is a bit behind they have now caught everything up with A17 and M3 - they just need to release a new AppleTV with the A17 and my media pipeline is fully set for efficient AV1. Infuse Pro does software AV1 decode on my 2022 Apple TV right now which is fine, though complex ASS vector animations tend to compete for compute resources unfortunately. It'll probably be another couple of years before AV1 hardware decode is in budget devices. But millions of people in the western world buy bleeding edge mobile devices all the time, especially nerds do, so at this point, failing to adopt AV1 as the main anime codec is just weebs being dumb and afraid of things they don't actually understand. It's the safest and cleanest codec to use from the legal/patent encumbrance angle as well (in addition to Opus), although weebs care less about that since this is all piracy anyway. I'm sure some groups may try to standardize on VVC video with USAC audio in the future, but I don't see the point. By the time VVC starts to see a lot of mainline adoption in the commercial space, AV2 will probably already have its bitstream spec finalized.
