## [ToshY] New Game! Batch (BDRip 1920x1080 FLAC) Improved/synced subs using only Doki's manga tracks. ### Source * [[Nano desu] New Game! - All Series [BD Batch]](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1554036) ### Changelog * Removed `anime` subtitle track; only keep `manga` track. * New Game! - E.04 (23:10): `This arm flab didn't used to be here` -> `This arm flab didn't use to be here` - E.10 (10:47): `Haduki` -> `Hazuki` * New Game! OVA - 04:02/04:12: Sign placement/colors - 03:10: `without problem` -> `without a problem` * New Game!! - E.01, E3 - E.12: -1 frame timing offset - E.06 - Doki video has 1 more starting frame compared to new video source, which after frame 1396-1397 straightens out again. - shift +1 frame - Frame shift after starting frame 2925; shift +3 frames - Frame shift after starting frame 9222; shift +1 frame - E.03 - E.12: - Timeline shifting (see remarks below); E.03 - E08, E.11 - E.12 - Name changes (E.01 - E.02 already had `manga` track from [here](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1120057)): - `Ko` -> `Kou` - `Hazime` -> `Hajime` - `Haduki` -> `Hazuki` - `Iizima` -> `Iijima` ["I just want the subs"](https://kitsunekko.net/subtitles/New%20Game!!/[ToshY]%20New%20Game!%20Batch%20(BDRip%201920x1080%20FLAC).zip) --- > **Timeline shifting notes** I've been breaking my head why the second season had such weird timings in [Nano's release](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1554036), as it seemed at several points the subs were getting gradually getting out of sync. So doing only a frame offset wasn't going to help. It was either a lot of manual work or figure out the root cause. I hate doing things manually, so took the second approach. What seems to have happened is Doki's release had subtitles synced to video with a framerate of 23.977 ("normally" would be 23.976). So while it's only a difference of 0.001, this seems to have a sort of drifting effect where the subtitles get gradually out-of-sync (while initially seeming in-sync). It also doesn't really help that despite this, [other people](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1340075) (unaware of the problem) tried to manual retime the signs/dialogue of Doki anyway on their own releases. Anyway, after a bit of searching I found this older cli tool [subsync](https://github.com/xuminic/subsync), for which I created a docker image, and ran it with a scale option on Doki's original subtitles (from [720p release](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/965642)) for episodes 2-8, 11-12 (episode 1 and 2 were already timed in [this release](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1120057) with a normal framerate, and for some fucking reason 9 and 10 as well). After that it was an additional -1 frame offset and (mostly) everything was synced. Note to self (and others): if you remux subtitles, make sure first that the video source of the subtitles you want to remux onto your new video source match in framerate. > **FFmpeg notes** As I test most subtitles by hardcoding with FFmpeg, I've noticed for the first time that certain signs containing tags like `\fr{x,y,z}` got disfigured after hardcoding. So I've found out that FFmpeg doesn't handle this shit well when you've got subtitles from a source (1280x720) with a video resolution different from your new source (1920x1080), as it seems to prioritize video resolution over `PlayRes{X,Y}` properties by default. And most of the time this wouldn't hurt, unless you're doing this for sign heavy subtitles that use tags that don't let them self resampled easily like in this case. To mitigate that, I've added `LayoutRes{X,Y}` properties (see [libass PR 641](https://github.com/libass/libass/pull/641)) in the script info header for episodes 3-12 (tested with ffmpeg `n5.1.3-16-g566aa38d98-20230813`), but you can also choose to use [`original_size:hd720`](https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-filters.html#subtitles-1) on your subtitles filter complex instead. Your pick. > **OP notes** A hellish debug adventure; too many hours; never again.

Thanks for fixing the subs. I didn't really check the subs properly because iirc I grab the subs from NH's release which technically the same video source that I got so I thought the timing will be okay for S2 which from a quick glance I thought the timing is good but taking a good look right now its really out of sync. Sorry for the inconvenience of my release. Thanks again.

@Kawtsun Completely understandable, and I honestly would've done the same in your shoes when remuxing stuff. It's on NH for not realizing the main problem (framerate differences) and basically just putting bandages on a gaping wound by fixing only the signs, which eventually made the initial shifting even worse leading me to take the subs of Doki's initial 720p release.
Thanks for your awesome releases. Recently rewatched Planetes using your upload, it was great. Just wondering, do you still have the restyled subs for Nodame? https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1058830#com-8 If yes, could you please reupload them?

@pirepere I would if I could, but I have to disappoint you as I can no longer find these particular subs for the OAD/OVA on any of my drives. The only thing I have left seems to be hardcoded MP4 files with those subs I think. You could try your luck in [this release](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1438611), maybe [Mabby](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1438611#com-3) or someone else still has them. If you do find them, let me know!
Sorry they took down your School Rumble release. I was going to copy down your release notes but didn't get to it in time. Just wanted to say thanks for the effort you put into your releases.

@Meitou45 I appreciate your comment as I was kind of disappointed it happened after the effort/time I put into. With that being said, I've also just (re)uploaded a zip of the subtitles (including the README) [here](https://kitsunekko.net/subtitles/School%20Rumble/[Exiled-Destiny][ToshY]%20School%20Rumble%20[updated%20README].zip). Hope that helps :)
