Un giorno incontra un giovane viaggiatore di nome Sōta che le chiede indicazioni per raggiungere una vecchia stazione termale abbandonata e una misteriosa "porta". Affascinata dal giovane, decide di seguirlo e finisce inavvertitamente con l'aprire proprio quella porta, la cui apertura però, secondo la leggenda, è causa di innumerevoli disastri. Suzume si ritrova anche a raccogliere una pietra che nelle sue mani si tramuta in un gattino che scappa via. Prima che accada l'irreparabile però Suzume e Sōta riescono a richiudere il portale scongiurando il peggio e Suzume apprende come Sōta sia in viaggio lungo tutto il Giappone proprio per chiudere questi portali e prevenire i disastri. Tuttavia proprio nel momento in cui Suzume e Sōta stanno facendo conoscenza, appare il gattino (Daijin) che tramuta Sōta in una sedia per bambini (con sole 3 gambe) e fuggendo poi via.
